History
Pack/Troop registered 31/7/1958 with C Liddle CM/ R Webb SM. Held 40th anniversary celebrations on 1/8/1998. Senior Troop registered 28/1/1965 with A Snell SSL. In 1959 had received land / had plans ready and in 1962 & 63 planning to build. Lions club of Dapto responsible for about half of cost and 2000 hours of labour building hall. Land donated by Mr & Mrs Amaral (developer of estate), adjoined park and was revolutionary design by architect Bob Wilson. Construction commenced November 1964 after 5 month delay due to Planning Authority. Hall in Amaral Ave officially opened 26/3/1966.
Lions Club originally undertook to jointly fundraise for hall. Fundraising included 200 club, a public speaking course, lucky envelopes and bottle drive. Unable to raise enough money, Lions Club then undertook to build hall. To comply with the land sub-division requirements that an area should be set aside for public use, the owners of estate Mr & Mrs Amaral granted an allotment for Group. The land was donated in 1963. On land was a building covenant which has 5 provisions for building:
1. The completed hall must be valued at not less than £5,000.
2. The hall is to be erected within 3 years of the Group acquiring the land.
3. The construction of the hall is to be of brick or timber.
4. The roof is not to be of galvanized iron or corrugated fibro construction.
5. The hall must be used at all time for Scouting purposes.
Failure to comply with these conditions would result in land reverting back to the estate.
Original plans, having to comply with covenant, were rejected by Area. Architects Palmer & Wilson submitted a plan of timber A-frame construction which fulfilled the requirements of covenant and was accepted by Scout Association, estate and Wollongong City Council.
Scouts raised £1600 and Lions in first 6 months raised £1600, but total was insufficient for building by contract. At Lions Club suggestion, the A-frames were changed from timber to steel fabrication. Joint building fund, “Dapto Lions & 2nd Dapto Boy Scouts Building Fund” was formed and operated until building completed. Town Planning Authority intervened and caused 5 months delay in start of construction. Work commenced November 1964.
With help of Lion Don McDonald concrete foundations, A-frame fabrication and erection were carried out at “most favourable cost”. Roof purloins tying A-frames together were fitted by Lions members. It was decided that brickwork be carried out by contract with Lions acting as brickies labourers. By mid-1965, the brickwork was practically completed, floor joists were in position and the dens and storeroom floors were completed.
Mid 1965 Jim Ramsay (S.L), who was a carpenter by trade, worked with Lions Club. The supply /erection of windows were carried out by a contractor.” By the time the roofing stage was reached, funds had almost been exhausted. Dapto Lions raised a further £1100, while Scout Troop negotiated a loan of £1000 from Bank so could finish building. Originally roof was to be of Klip-lok construction but cost too high. Decided to use and install themselves Australuco Roofing. On 27/11/65 5 teams installed roofing to hall. Long ladders suitable for A-frame work and portable staging were loaned from Tallawarra Power Station.
Scout and Lions ladies catered on day. Tallow wood flooring was installed by Lions. Cement rendering of the main hall, dens and external front wall was carried out by Lion Ron Evans. Electrical wiring and plumbing was installed by Lions members. Of cost of £5426, Dapto Lions contributed £2700, 2nd Dapto £2632 and donations £94. Opened 26th March 1966, hall is a monument to the co-operation between the community and the Lions Club of Dapto. The value of hall, kitchen and toilets (in 1966) was estimated at £10,000.
Opening was preceded by march of District Scouts / Guides from Dapto Railway Station to hall. The key was handed from Lions Club of Dapto to Scout Group by Lions president Bill Bones and accepted by Group president Ray Taylor and Group leader Bob Johnson. Hall officially opened by K. Wiseman, Vice President, Area Scout Council. Hall was extended in 1971 by adding scouters room, seniors room, a meeting room and a store room. Extension called Ray Webb extension. List of sponsors for extension included Lions club who prepared site and installed 5 yards of paving and a Lions member did the steel fabrication. The Scout group provided a dressed sandstone slab at front of hall for display of Lions Club emblem with space for lettering to indicate that hall was a Lions project.
