History
Certificate of Merit in 1916 to Harold Lemon for stopping a runaway horse. JW Barker in letter to Editor Goulburn Evening Post in 22/8/1916 edition said “ I noticed the report in your issue of Thursday last of a presentation to Scout Lemon for stopping Miss Hunt’s runaway recently in Bourke-street. I wish to contradict same and would point out that the runaway in question was stopped by me”.
In 1917, the 1st Goulburn Scout Group was in existence with A. Turnbull as SM. Defunct, it was re-organised in June 1921, with F. H. Freeguard as SM. For some years it was a closed Group (Anglican) but it is now an open Group (John Penney’s History of Scouting in Goulburn). That history says leaders in 1917 SM A. A. Turnbull, ASM E. Haynes, GSM C. In 1940s/ early 50s met at St Saviours Anglican church Hall, later at scout hall in North St. Goulburn Evening Post 7 August 1944 said had raised £149 towards building a hall but lacked a site. Hall in North Street, Goulburn was built in 1955 and opened by Alderman R. Stalker, Mayor, on July 23rd, 1955.
Reminiscences of Colin McKay a Member/Kings Scout at group in 1930s :
- he joined in early 1931 when Troop met at St Saviours Church of England Church hall and Group was associated with church
- hall was large with high ceiling from which swung a trapeze. Troop Leader (TL) would invite / compel new Scouts to get on trapeze with him and he would get it swinging almost to roof
- TL also taught boxing which was thought necessary to defend ourselves from local louts who sometimes gave us a hard time.
- At time was 2nd & 3rd Troops and for while a 4th (in West Goulburn) but it didn’t prosper.
- SM was Charles Elm who worked on railways
- Had use of an area of bush 4 miles from town, a timbered hillside running down to Wollondilly River.
- Group visited by Cremorne Scouts who had coloured scarf and as a result group decided to change from black to blue & gold scarf.
